Wild wild Weasel | the F-16CJ Wild Weasel
A modified version of the F16 Fighting Falcon intended for Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) missions is called the F16 Wild Weasel. Originally, the term “Wild Weasel” was used to refer to specialized aircraft that were assigned to neutralize and destroy enemy air defense systems, especially surface-to-air missile (SAM) sites. The USAF created the Wild Weasel concept in 1965 during the Vietnam War in response to Soviet SAM introduction and American strike aircraft downing during Operation Rolling Thunder over North Vietnam. The name “Wild Weasel” comes from Project Wild Weasel, the USAF development program for a specialized SAM-detection and suppression aircraft, which was officially authorized on August 12, 1965, and was called “Iron Hand” at the time. The tactic was also referred to as a “Iron Hand” mission, although in actuality the term mainly referred to the suppression strike before the main attack.
The F4G Wild Weasel V (sometimes called the Advanced Wild Weasel) was derived from the F4E, the most advanced Phantom model, which had an internal cannon and considerable ground-attack capability. This upgrade included a cockpit update for the rear seat to handle the electronic combat environment, as well as the removal of the cannon and replacement with the APR-38 Radar Homing and Warning Receiver (later improved to the APR-47). F4Es were upgraded into 134 F4G variants, the first of which took to the air in 1975. In 1978, squadron service commenced.
Anti-radiation missiles (ARMs) such as the AGM-88 HARM (High-speed Anti-Radiation Missile) and radar homing and warning systems are among the advanced equipment usually carried by the F16 Wild Weasel. In order to neutralize hostile air defense systems and make way for friendly aircraft, these missiles are made to detect and zero in on their radar transmissions. The F4G Phantom was the final aircraft in the USAF inventory to be configured especially for the SEAD mission due to a shift in aircraft design theory that prioritized adaptable multi-role aircraft. Production of the Block 50 and Block 52 F16 Fighting Falcon, which is presently designated for the Wild Weasel mission, started in 1991. This mission is assigned to the single-seat Block 50,52 F-16C, and the aircraft modified for this mission are called F16CJ,DJ. In addition to flying the aircraft, the pilot now selects and deploys weapons against threats on the ground.
Wild Weasel missions are considered among the most dangerous in modern air warfare due to the need to fly into heavily defended airspace to locate and destroy enemy air defense systems. The F16 Wild Weasel variant plays a crucial role in enabling other aircraft to operate safely in hostile environments by neutralizing enemy air defenses.
