The Fascinating Process as a Stoat Turns White | Discover Wildlife | Robert E Fuller

Stoats are capable of the ultimate disappearing trick: they can turn white to blend in with a snowy landscape. Watch the magic as this one moults her brown fur and replaces it with a snow-white coat.

Going ermine

Only some stoats in the UK can actually do this and the transformation in inherited. Unfortunately, climate change means these winter white coats are no longer useful camouflage for stoats.

Watch her transform

This short film follows a stoat living in my UK garden as she slowly moults her chestnut brown fur and replaces it with white. Follow the timeline to see long it takes her to transform. This year the winter has been very mild and she still has a sprinkling of brown on her back. On a cold year she tends to turn white far faster.

I am a British wildlife artist and filmmaker on a mission to share my love for wildlife with the world. As well as creating detailed animal film and art portraits, I promote wildlife tours around the world and do all I can to help conserve and protect wildlife here at my home in Yorkshire. I hope that by putting nature in the frame I can foster a deep love for wildlife amongst my followers.

Of course, you may like to purchase my artwork which you can find on my website: Many of my paintings are portraits of the wonderful characters you watch here!
